Small Business Q&A (Questions & Answers) - Part 1

Running a small business is no easy feat. It requires tenacity and ambition, but above all, a willingness to adapt and learn.

Here are some of the biggest questions small business owners have.

Q: How important is it to create a brand for my business? Does it really make that big of a difference?

Answer = A well designed and thought out brand is essential to business. No matter how big, small, young, old, or well known your business are, a brand will not only help create business familiarity among customers, but will allow you to stand out among your competition.

A brand creates an identity for your business; what you do and why you do it should both be transparent in your brand. Even a simple, yet eye catching logo, thoughtful brand messaging, and well designed support materials can help your brand pop.

Q: How can I come up with a great name for my business?

Answer = The first step in choosing a name for your business is brainstorming, by writing down a list of names you like. Once you have a solid list, use domain search tools, such as the one on GoDaddy, to see of the domain is already taken. Your next step is to do a trademark search, on the USPTO website, to make sure the name is legally available for you to use for your business.

When creating a business name, make sure the name is easy to spell and pronounce, yet unique.

Q: I’m on a tight budget. Are there inexpensive, yet effective ways to get my brand out there?

Answer = Before the advent of social media marketing, marketers relied on traditional forms of advertising. Billboards, print ads, television commercials, etc. Each of which cost businesses a significant amount of money to run.

However, in today’s day and age, marketing can be quite inexpensive. Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, along with email marketing allow marketers and businesses alike to reach customers at a low cost. Approximately 1.7 billion people, worldwide, have one or more social media accounts, meaning your potential reach is exponential.

If you are tight on budget, try setting up a simple Facebook campaign, targeting your demographic.

Q: How can I drive traffic to my website for my business?

Answer = Here are some simple steps to follow:

  • Create meta descriptions and SEO tags for each page on your website, applicable to the content on the page
  • Keep website content up to date and relevant to your business. Blogs are a great way to add fresh, original content to your site that not only drive traffic to your site, through social sharing, but also increases your site’s SEO ranking.
  • Use services like Google AdWords to push your site higher up on the google search list.
  • Create social media campaigns, with backlinks to your site, that engage your users.
